'The University Campus is a Masterpiece!': Karina Imamutdinova is Speaking About Her Mobility at Chulalongkorn University (Thailand)

Почему вы выбрали Таиланд для мобильности? Оправдались ли ваши страхи и ожидания?

Принимая решение об участии в мобильности, важным условием для меня была возможность изучить что-то новое и выйти из зоны комфорта. Так как у меня уже был опыт получения образования в Европейском университете, при выборе направления на мобильность я ставила в приоритет страны Азии. Таиланд заинтересовал меня своей богатой культурой и теплой погодой. От мобильности я ожидала получить интересный опыт и много новых знакомств и знаний. Все мои ожидания оправдались!

Удалось ли вам найти общий язык со студентами принимающего вуза? Есть ли у вас советы, как можно легче адаптироваться в новой среде?

Студенты принимающего вуза были дружелюбны и общительны. Они всегда были готовы помочь и подсказать всё необходимое. Помимо местных студентов, в университете было большое количество ребят со всего мира, с которыми мы организовывали совместные поездки и другие мероприятия. Чтобы легче адаптироваться к новой среде, следует запастись терпением и не бояться первым делать шаг к знакомству с новыми людьми.

Есть ли различия между вашей программой в Вышке и программой в принимающем вузе? Может, другой метод преподавания или подход к учебе, больше заданий?

Мне показалось, что в принимающем вузе было намного больше заданий и самостоятельной работы. Порой было действительно сложно получить хорошую оценку. Более того, многие преподаватели более строго относились к оцениванию заданий и ставили высокие требования студентам. Тем не менее, каждый из преподавателей был всегда готов помочь и подсказать в процессе обучения.

Какие достопримечательности вы рекомендуете посмотреть ребятам в Таиланде? Может есть какие-то необычные или непопулярные места, которыми хотите поделиться?

В Бангкоке я обязательно советую посетить Wat Samphran (храм дракона), попробовать thai roti c бананом и яйцом в China Town, посетить центр современного искусства BACC. Также следует обязательно посетить север Таиланда (Chiang Mai и Pai), чтобы погулять по джунглям, полазить по горам, полюбоваться многочисленными водопадами и посетить известный Lantern Festival.

Есть ли какие-то мифы про Таиланд, которые на деле оказались неправдой? Чего точно не стоит бояться?

Самый главный миф – в Таиланде грязно и опасно. На самом деле, Бангкок – это очень чистый и современный город, который показался мне одним из самых безопасных мегаполисов, в которых я была.

Расскажите про сам кампус и инфраструктуру. Какие мероприятия проводятся в Университете Чулалонгкорна?

Кампус университета – это отдельное искусство. Он располагается на огромной зеленой территории с высокими деревьями, фонтанами и лужайками, по которым гуляют вараны. В кампусе большое количество кафе, столовых и коворкингов. Самое классное место на кампусе – огромный спортивный центр с открытым бассейном, теннисным кортом и тренажерным залом для всех желающих. В университете постоянно происходят интересные мероприятия – от концертов до марафонов.

Что точно нужно взять с собой тем, кто поедет на обмен в Таиланд?

В Таиланд необходимо взять готовность пробовать все новое и необычное и открытость к миру. Все остальное можно без проблем купить в одном из многочисленных торговых центров города.

Why did you choose Thailand for academic mobility? Have your fears and expectations come true?

When I was deciding whether to participate in academic mobility or not, an important condition for me was an opportunity to learn something new and to get out of my comfort zone. Since I already had experience in getting an education at a European university, I put Asian countries as a priority this time. Thailand turned out to be the best option for me because of its rich culture and warm weather. I expected to get an interesting experience and a lot of new acquaintances and knowledge from the mobility programme and all my expectations have come true!

Did you manage to find a common ground with the students of Chulalongkorn University? Do you have any tips on how to adapt to a new environment more easily?

The students of the host university have always been friendly and sociable. They were ready to help anytime I was in need. In addition to local students, there was a large number of exchange students from all over the world, with whom we organised adventurous trips and other events. I know for a fact that adapting to a new country might be quite challenging. Just be patient and don’t be afraid to put yourself out there and everything will be alright!

Are there any differences between your programmes at HSE University and at the host university? Is a teaching style or an approach to learning any different?

In my opinion, the study process at the host university included a lot more assignments and individual activities. Sometimes it was really challenging to get a good grade. Moreover, many teachers were stricter about the assessment of the assignments and set high expectations for students. Nevertheless, each of the teachers was always ready to help and support students in the learning process.

What sights do you recommend seeing? Are there any unusual places or hidden gems that you would like to share?

In Bangkok, you should definitely visit Wat Samphran (The Dragon Temple), try the Thai roti with banana and egg in ChinaTown and visit the BACC Centre of Contemporary Art. It is also a must to visit Northern Thailand (Chiang Mai and Pai) to walk through the jungle, hike in the mountains, admire numerous waterfalls and visit the famous Lantern Festival.

Are there any myths about Thailand that actually turned out to be false? What shouldn’t one be afraid of?

The most important myth is that Thailand is dirty and dangerous. In fact, Bangkok is a very clean and modern city, which seemed to be one of the safest cities I have ever been to.

Tell us about the campus and its infrastructure. What events are held in Chulalongkorn University?

The university campus is a masterpiece! It is located in a huge green area with tall trees, fountains and lawns where monitor lizards walk. The campus has a large number of cafes, canteens and coworking spaces. The coolest place on campus is a huge sports centre with an outdoor swimming pool, tennis court and gym for everyone. Interesting events were constantly held at the university.

What do those who will go to Thailand for an exchange programme definitely need to take with them?

In my opinion, there is nothing essential that you cannot buy in one of the numerous shopping malls in Bangkok. Just be ready to explore and learn with an open mind and enjoy your semester!
