СТРАННЫЕ ДУХИ ЛЕГЕНДАРИУМА (ЧАСТЬ I )
A. SHADOW&DARK SPIRITS
Или духи теней и тьмы.
Сюда входят Айнур, связанные с тенями, тьмой, сумерками и призрачным миром до восхода Солнца и Луна, позднее скрывшиеся в недоступных областях Земли, куда не доходил свет и не обитали Дети Илуватара.
Следует оговориться, что не все подобные духи были злыми и падшими, потому что Тьма и Сумерки (как природные явления) сами по себе, в рамках Эа – всего лишь обратная сторона Света, необходимые для отдыха Эрухини, кельвар и олвар. «Темную» или «теневую» атрибутику эльфийские и нуменорские предания приписывают не только Мелькору-Морготу, но и Валар – Мандосу, Лориэну, Ниэнне, Вайрэ, Эстэ, а также майэ Мелиан (или (Г)Венделин(г)), даже самим эльфам. Хотя и с благими силами шутки могут обернуться плохо, но все же они не стали бы причинять кому-то вреда осознанно. Однако Моргот использовал Тьму, чтобы скрывать свои преступления и внушать ужас, сделав Ночь опасной и полной кошмаров; и совращенные Айнур помогали ему в этом.
Самый полный перечь «теневых» духов можно встретить в Утраченных Сказаниях. В сущности, «тень» ассоциируется со слугами Мандоса (и они описывались мрачными и загадочными – подстать своему владыке), слугами Лориэна (они прекрасные, нежные и наименее опасные) и слугами Мэлько (и именно благодаря им тьма и ночь стали «прибежищем страха»); и все они чужды эльфам и людям.
«At that time did many strange spirits fare into the world, for there were pleasant places dark and quiet for them to dwell in. Some came from Mandos, aged spirits that journeyed from Iluvatar with him who are older than the world and very gloomy and secret, and some from the fortresses of the North where Melko then dwelt in the deep dungeons of Utumna. Full of evil and unwholesome were they; luring and restlessness and horror they brought, turning the dark into an ill and fearful thing, which it was not before. But some few danced thither with gentle feet exuding evening scents, and these came from the gardens of Lorien».
«Still is the world full of these in the days of light, lingering alone in shadowy hearts of primeval forests, calling secret things across a starry waste, and haunting caverns in the hills that few have found: — but the pinewoods are yet too full of these old unelfin and inhuman spirits for the quietude of Eldar or of Men».

Валар беспокоили эти духи, даже если они не служили Мэлько – как бы они не повредили Детям Илуватара.
«Lo! the Earth and its shadows are no place for creatures so fair, whom only the heart and mind of Iluvatar have conceived. Fair are the pine-forests and the thickets, but theyme full of unelfin spirits and Mandos' children walk abroad and vassals of Melko lurk in strange places — and we ourselves would not be without the sight of this sweet folk».

Интересно заметить, что их опасения в некоторой степени сбылись – так, Эльвэ, вождь телери, оказался зачарован Мелиан (едва ли имел место дурной умысел с её стороны, но Айнур не всегда понимали, какими хрупкими и восприимчивыми могут быть Дети).
По крайне мере по некоторым источникам, Мелиан поселилась в Дориате (Артаноре) не в одиночку.

Иным из Айнур сумрачный мир Средиземья в Эпоху Древ пришелся по сердцу больше, нежели блаженство Валинора – может быть, они, подобно любящим Луну и Звезды эльфам, верили, что Сумерки хранят память о древних временах, когда мир принадлежал только им, может – яркий Свет чужд самой их природе (как отчасти Мандосу и Лориэну, с их весьма смешанной реакцией на восход Солнца и любовь к неосвещенным землям Запада).
Многие из «сумеречных» Айнур осели среди эльфов, отказавшихся поселиться в Валиноре.

Важно, что падение Утумно не стало концом для духов, что делали темноту тревожной.
«And the saps and cavernous places beneath the surface of the earth are full yet of the dark spirits that were prisoned that day when Melko was taken, and yet many are the ways whereby they find the outer world from time to time — from fissures where they shriek with the voices of the tide on rocky coasts, down dark water-ways that wind unseen for many leagues, or out of the blue arches where the glaciers of Melko find their end».

Эта деталь сохранится и на самых поздних стадиях Легендариума – всякий раз, когда мы будем задумываться, есть ли на востоке от моря «независимое» от Темного Властелина (сверхъестественное) зло.

«Now Melko gets him gone to Mandos, and far from Valinor he plans rebellion and vengeance upon both Gnomes and Gods. Indeed, dwelling for nigh three ages in the vaults of Mandos Melko had made friends to himself of certain gloomy spirits there and perverted them to ill, promising them great lands and regions on the Earth for their [?having] if they aided him when he called on them in need; and now he gathers them to him in the dark ravines of the mountains about Mandos».

Вспоминается «чародей Ту» (или Туво) из Сказания о Пробуждении Людей, что называл себя Владыкой Сумерек и правил эльфами-хисильди. Это, пожалуй, самый яркий и известный пример, тесно связанный с другими вопросами, так что лишь позволим себе отметить, что он тоже считался духом из чертогов Мандоса, что был обучен Мэлько «черной магии» и бежал с ним из Валинора, но предпочел строить свой маленький Ангбанд среди эльфийских подданных, покуда не столкнулся с Фанкилем.
С другой стороны, некоторые «духи тени», составляющие целый «народ», были встречены нолдор при возвращении в Средиземье.

Судя по всему, на идеологической оси «Замысел Эру – Искажение Мелькора» они не занимали четкой позиции, а, подобно Мелиан и её «свите», желали свободной, даже «дикой» жизни. Любопытно, что они, возможно, пришли в Мир самостоятельно, не в свите (или в свиту) кого-то из Валар (и, возможно, уже после них).
«The Gnomes sojourned in the Land of Shadows (i.e. Hisilome), and had dealings with the Shadow Folk. These were fays (C); no one knows whence they came: they are not of the Valar nor of Melko, but it is thought that they came from the outer void and primeval dark when the world was first fashioned».

Вновь встречаемся с безусловно развращенными духами Тени мы при восходе светил (интересно, что, хотя Тилион отбил первое нападение, но слуги Мелькора не оставляли преследования).

Then he assailed Tilion, sending spirits of shadow against him, and there was strife in Ilmen beneath the paths of the stars, and Tilion was the victor: as he ever yet hath been, though still the pursuing darkness overtakes him at whiles».

Занятное происхождение обрушившихся на Луну духов упоминают «Преображенные Мифы» (но это тема следующей части статьи).
«The Valar to counteract this make the Moon. Out of earth-stuff or Sun? This is to be a subsidiary light to mitigate night (as Melkor had made it), and also a 'vessel of watch and ward' to circle the world. But Melkor gathered in the Void spirits of cold &c. and suddenly assailed it, driving out the Vala Tilion. The Moon was thereafter long while steerless and vagrant and called Rana (neuter)».

Слуги Моргота остались в Средиземье и после его разгрома и изгнания в Пустоту.
«But in Middle-earth dwelt lesser men, who knew not the Lords nor the Firstborn save by rumour; and among them were some who had served Morgoth of old, and were accursed. And there were evil things also upon earth, made by Morgoth in the days of his dominion, demons and dragons and mockeries of the creatures of Iluvatar. B. FALSE GODS&PHANTOMS
Или ложные боги и фантомы. Удивительно, но две категории духов совпадают чаще, чем может показаться.
Ещё со времен Утраченных Сказаний Нан Дум(/н)гортин (позднее Нан Дунгортеб) приобрел недобрую славу, связанную с некими «темными идолами» (конечно, этим сущностям поклонялись, но кто мог это делать до прихода людей?..)
«...until one even at dusk the Valar brought him to a glade in that northward region of Artanor that was called afterward Nan Dumgorthin, the land of the dark idols, but that is a matter that concerns not this tale».

Поразительную характеристику духи Нан Дунгортина получили в Лэ о Детях Хурина: места их обитания полны «фантомных [запомним!] сумерек», они «темны, несвященны»; сами сущности именовались «безымянными богами», более древними, нежели Моргот или Валар (!). Демонические голоса, что слышал Флиндинг (Гвиндор), ясно свидетельствуют, что речь шла о жилище падших Айнур.

in Nan Dungorthin where nameless gods
have shrouded shrines in shadows secret,
more old than Morgoth or the ancient lords

Как подсказывают авторские заметки, с некими «фантомами» Нан Дунгортина могли столкнуться Берен и Лутиэн.
«Beren and Luthien escape to the Shadowy Mountains, but become lost and bewildered in the dreads of Nan Dungorthin, and are hunted by phantoms, and snared at last by the great spiders. Huan rescues them, and guides them down Sirion, and so they reach Doriath from the south, and find the woods silent and empty till they come to the guarded bridge».

То, что в источниках «фантомами» именуются падшие Айнур (при том лишенные fanar – насколько можно судить), не оставляет сомнений, например, войско, с которым в Тол Сирион пришел Саурон (Ту Некромант).

enchantments and dark sigaldry
did weave and wield. In glamoury
that necromancer held his hosts
of phantoms and of wandering ghosts,

C. FALSE ELVES
В эту группу входят духи, которых принимали (или, скорее, они выдавали себя) за эльфов среди людей или среди самих квенди. Интересно, что, хотя все пришедшие в Мир духи облачились в зримые тела (fanar), то, что некоторые из них них принимали облик, неотличимый от эльфийского или даже человеческого, описывается как что-то исключительное (т. е. fanar других Айнур, в т. ч. Валар и известных майар не воспринимались идентичными телам Эрухини даже «на глаз»).
Теоретически, люди могли принимать за эльфов и светлых младших духов (в поздних источниках именуемых «майар»).
«Many lesser spirits they [Valar] brought in their train, both great and small, and some of these Men have confused with the Eldar or Elves: but wrongly, for they were before the world, but Elves and Men awoke first in the world after the coming of the Valar».

Но чаще всего, «ложные эльдар» – это слуги Мелькора–Моргота, чья цель была одурачить эльфов и настроить людей против своих родичей.

«After a reference to 'the Mines of Melko' and 'the Spell of Bottomless Dread' (the spell that Melko cast upon his slaves), the story concludes with 'the Building of Gondolin' and 'the estrangement of Men and Elves in Hisilome, owing to the Battle of Unnumbered Tears': Melko fostered distrust and kept them spying on each other, so that they should not combine against him; and he fashioned the false-fairies or Kaukareldar in their likeness, and these deceived and betrayed Men"».

Но особое место в этой категории занимают первые орки. Профессор размышлял о меньших духах, что принимали обличье Детей; занятно, что здесь «ложные эльдар» неуловимо смыкаются с «фантомами» (что могли быть не только не-принявшими телесное обличье духами, но и лишенными своих fanar).
«The least could have been primitive (and much more powerful and perilous) Orcs; but by practising when embodied procreation they would (cf. Melian) [become] more and more earthbound, unable to return to spirit-state (even demon-form), until released by death (killing), and they would dwindle in force. When released they would, of course, like Sauron, be 'damned': i.e. reduced to impotence, infinitely recessive: still hating but unable more and more to make it effective physically (or would not a very dwindled dead Orc-state be a poltergeist?)»

Рассуждая о этимологии слова «орк» в эльфийских языках, Профессор отмечал, что изначально (очевидно, первыми квенди, жившими вокруг Вод Пробуждения) оно применялось для «фантомов» (духов, принявших «видимый» (но не телесный!) облик).
«The Elves from their earliest times invented and used a word or words with a base (o)rok to denote anything that caused fear and/or horror. It would originally have been applied to 'phantoms' (spirits assuming visible forms) as well as to any independently existing creatures. Its application (in all Elvish tongues) specifically to the creatures called Orks».

Можно предположить, что эльфоподобные обличья использовались слугами Мелькора для обмана (а потом похищения для чудовищных опытов) первых квенди, подобно тому, как они обманывали людей в поздние годы.
«But it is known that Melkor had become aware of the Quendi before the Valar began their war against him, and the joy of the Elves in Middle-earth had already been darkened by shadows of fear. Следует помнить, что первоначально «орки» не рассматривались как нечто отдельное от Эрухини – это была просто «насмешка», не имевшая даже извращенных признаков творчества Мелькора (в отличии от тех же драконов). Лишь во времена Войны Самоцветов, когда у Моргота возникла потребность в армиях Воплощенных, можно говорить о том, некоторые из его майар принимали обличье Эрухини для жизни среди орков (а не просто обмана), становясь внешне неотличимыми от них, разве что за исключением габаритов.
«For Morgoth had many servants, the oldest and most potent of whom were immortal, belonging indeed in their beginning to the Maiar; and these evil spirits like their Master could take on visible forms. Those whose business it was to direct the Orcs often took Orkish shapes, though they were greater and more terrible. Thus it was that the histories speak of Great Orcs or Orc-captains who were not slain, and who reappeared in battle through years far longer than the span of the lives of Men».
