VK's video player is one of the most popular social network services. Users download 1.4 million videos each day — a figure that has doubled over the past six months and shows no signs of stopping. People are now even more likely to create their own video stories, capture major events, share their emotions and keep track of others.
Today we have greatly simplified how people watch videos on VK: videos located in the newsfeed or on profile and community pages now play automatically. You can begin viewing videos of your friends' journeys, clips of your favorite musician or the latest update of a video blog without ever having the need to press play.
For VK users, this means that their news feed becomes more exciting and dynamic while those users posting content can attract greater attention from their target audience.
Autoplay is already available in the full version of our site, and it will appear shortly in our iPhone and Android mobile apps.
How does this work?
We have used HLS technology so that videos will start playing as quickly as possible. Moreover, the video player automatically selects the video quality most ideal for your current Internet connection. Sound does not play at start and can be enabled by clicking on the video.
If autoplay is overly distracting or consumes too much bandwidth, it can be disabled in your settings. Also, once this service comes out for mobile apps, it will be possible to specify for which types of Internet connection videos will autoplay.
