IN RECENT YEARS TOURISM HAS REALLY TAKEN OFF. HOWEVER, MANY PEOPLE THINK THAT TOURISM RUINS EVERYTHING THAT IT TOUCHES.

The popularity of tourism has increased rapidly lately. So, while some people believe that tourism provides one with a great opportunity to travel the world and to get acquainted with foreign culture, others claim that it only has a negative influence on the places of interest.

Personally, I hold to the opinion that the world's most treasured sights are in danger of being destroyed by an unstoppable march of tourism. To begin with, the majority of visitors steal pieces of the sights, such as stones, or carve their names on the ancient walls. Besides, the fumes of the tourist buses eat away at the stonework of cathedrals and temples. Moreover, waste left by tourists brings harm to both local ecology and the cultural spots.

However, the supporters of another point of view are sure that there are some things to be said in favour of tourism. In fact, tourists saturate local economies with money that can be further invested into the economic development of the country. In addition, the inflow of tourists caters to restoring abandoned historic sights, which expands the influence of the country's culture on the rest of the world.

Nevertheless, I cannot agree with the opinion mentioned above. Actually, authorities lose far more money trying to diminish the consequences of tourist vandalism. Furthermore, if most locals become involved into the tourism services, the country may fall into unemployment crisis once the international interest for this country decreases.

To sum up, I am still deeply convinced that tourism brings any country far more harm than good. Personally, I cannot help feeling sorry for my native city when it becomes overcrowded with tourists.
